Herbert Signs Two-Year Deal with Tigers; Twal & Fainu Extended

Tigers

The Wests Tigers have continued to build for the future, announcing the signing of centre Patrick Herbert on a two-year deal following a successful train-and-trial period during the 2026 pre-season.

Herbert, who has spent the last two seasons playing in the Illawarra Rugby League competition after a challenging run of injuries, has fought his way back to earn another shot at the top level. The signing is a testament to both his resilience and the Tigers' willingness to back players with NRL pedigree who are hungry to prove themselves.

A Second Chance

Herbert's path back to the NRL has been anything but straightforward. After injuries derailed his career at his previous club, many wrote him off. But a strong pre-season with the Tigers caught the eye of coaching staff, and his combination of size, speed, and experience in the centres gives them valuable depth in the outside backs.

Locking In the Forward Pack

In equally significant news, the Tigers have also extended the contracts of forwards Alex Twal and Sione Fainu through to the end of 2029. Both players have been key figures in the club's rebuilding phase, and locking them in provides crucial stability in the middle of the park.

Twal, in particular, has been a model of consistency — rarely missing games and always putting in a shift in defence. Fainu's energy off the bench and his growing confidence in the hooking role make him a valuable asset as the Tigers continue to climb the ladder.

Tigers Flying High

The signings come as the Tigers sit a remarkable fifth on the ladder after two rounds, with two wins and a +28 points differential. After years of disappointment, there's a genuine sense of optimism at Concord. Securing key players long-term while adding depth through smart signings like Herbert suggests the front office is backing the on-field momentum.

The Tigers face the Rabbitohs this Saturday — a true test of whether this early-season form is the real deal or a honeymoon period. Either way, the club is clearly building something.
